Several months ago I was at a business getting shirts embroidered with my name and Logo. The owner was moving and standing awkwardly. I asked her problem. She had been scheduled for knee replacement 2 years ago and had to cancel. In the pursueing years she had gotten much worse and was scheduled for replacement the following week. I suggested she get her x-rays and come in for an exam. She had pictures of her films on her cell phone, (marvelous things aren't they?) I treated her on Friday and she cancelled the surgery. Two months later she is giddy with excitement and walks everywhere. She hasn't spent even the cost of the first MRI 2 years ago and the pain of 4 years is a bad memory. ... See MoreSee Less

How do you say thanks to a friend of 37 years, a prayer warrior, a patient, someone who can fix almost anything, cleans my carpets at the office and my home? Larry Ahrendsen of AHRENDSEN'S CARPET CARE, came in for care yesterday and stayed to find a water leak we have been searching for, for at least 3 weeks. Larry found it. He helped me find a temporary fix and then returned today to repair the leak. This project had already reached over a thousand dollars. He found the source and repaired it for less than $20 parts. I wish I were half the doctor for my patients as this man has been as my friend. Thanks Larry, may your family and business be blessed equal to the blessing you have been to me. Bill Miskelly ... Corporate Wellness Program

The health and wellness of your employees is directly related to the function and profitability of your company. Whether your employees do repetitive tasks, manual labor or are using their mental skills, they will be limited by or can excel because of their state of health.

We work hard to reduce absenteeism, but have you thought about presenteeism?

Presenteeism- What is it?

  • Presenteeism is defined as lost productivity that occurs when employees come to work but perform below par due to any kind of illness. While the costs associated with the absenteeism of employees has been long studied, the costs of presenteeism is newly being studied.
  • The cost of absenteeism is obvious — 100 percent of the worker’s productivity is lost each day the worker is not on the job; the cost of presenteeism is a more “hidden” cost because the worker is on the job but is not productive and may be an accident waiting to happen.
  • Presenteeism is common. Many workers come to work not feeling wel l— they work with back pain, allergies, arthritis, and other conditions that can impair their own performance and productivity. Some workers come to the job sick with the flu or a cold, and these workers also perform below par. In addition, contagious workers may infect others, and this could contribute to further absenteeism and/or presenteeism in the business.

Many employees may not show notable signs of physical sickness but are mentally unable to function because of stress or impaired mental function. This impairment is hard to identify, but may hurt your company even more. It is often the result of inflammation and chemical imbalance created by an unhealthy or unsuited lifestyle.

How can Miskelly Chiropractic Center help?

When you observe true health and wellness you are not simply seeing the absence of symptoms or the labels of disease, you are experiencing optimum function and vitality. In applying a Wholistic Concept we want to assess current function and then create an environment for optimal function. We don’t stop at treating symptoms and numbers, we strive to enhance performance.

Our program is also more concerned with biomarkers of health than markers of disease.Blood work has standards for health, Saliva, Hair Analysis and the Insight Melenium made up of (5) five tests to determine the health and function of the Central Nervous System are all markers given to your employees to follow their improvement. We are concerned with strategies to solve health problems and not simply manage them.We are interested in reducing dependence on medication and supporting the body in its’ natural processes. We have developed strategies to create that reserve of health. We look at biological function and therefore look at and improve mental function at the same time.

If we can help people learn what lifestyle is more suited to their body, we can solve many of the most common health puzzles. We have a successful weight loss program because we focus on improving function of the human body, and we don’t focus on weight since it is just another symptom. Working with many diabetics, heart disease sufferers, mental dysfunctions, cancer support, fibromyalgia and fatigue, ADD, etc., we look for resolution of problems. Our ultimate goal is to have people avoid these diseases altogether.

Quarterly Health and Safety talks are recommended to give your employees a foundation and information needed to make implimentation possible. After all Implimentation is the secret of maintaining any successful program or activity.

If we can create healthy and self sufficient people, they will contribute more to your organization and in effect create corporate wellness. You can utilize our services to assess the current health status of your employees using both conventional markers for disease, and also by obtaining biomarkers of health and fitness. From there you can have us educate your people on how to move toward better health and productivity. People with advanced disease processes will be made less of a liability by improvement of their condition.

Informed, sharp, and motivated people are who you need working for you. Someone biologically and physiologically healthy will function at a higher level. You can bank on a skilled, motivated, healthy individual and we can help. CALL (260) 747-1596 check us out at www.chiropractorfortwayne.com

Headaches and Neck Pain

Headaches have multiple sources, some simple like dehydration, bright lights, heat, cold, constipation, poor sleep, too much sleep and not enough activity. Some more complicated like sinus congestion or infection, tooth abcesses, allergies, stress and vascular spasms or dilations and toxicities of many kinds. There are a few caused by serious problems like brain tumors.Fort Wayne Chiropractor’s must be aware of all those and many more. Many of those headaches can be related to subluxations.Subluxations are vertebra that are misaligned and pinch the very nerves that were supposed to protect you from most of those stresses.  That is the job of the Chiropractor, locate and fix those subluxations which then allows your body to heal itself.

Neck Pain most often happens with loss of range of motion.  With the loss of motion is joint painand muscle spasms or muscle splinting. When you experience this pain and it lasts for weeks or months, the body begins to lay down calcium that follows the bone, discs, ligaments or tendon fibers in an attempt to stablilize the joint. This is seen on x-rays as arthritis. As a Fort Wayne Chiropractor, I see my job is to restore normal function as quickly as possible to slow the development of arthritis.  Restored joint function also restores joint stability.

Neck Pain/Cervical Pain, what is it?

Neck Pain/Cervical Pain, what is it? What causes it?

The neck is the seven vertebrae from just below the skull down to the shoulders. This is the Cervical Spine. Your pain can be caused by mechanical joint dysfunctions, disc degeneration, whiplash, herniated discs, tension, trauma, pinched nerves, muscle spasms and more.

Beside Pain, here are some other symptoms.

Reduced range of motion (ROM) is often a problem to drivers, sports enthusiast, and people used to having a good range of motion. Most often the symptoms are dull and aching.

After prolonged difficulty the ROM is restricted and motion can become sharp when attempting to force the motion. Many people find that massage helps the stiffness and tight muscles. If the pain continues the pain can become tingling, numbness, fullness, weakness, difficulty swallowing, pulsations near the source of pain. If the nerves are pinched, the, muscles, glands and organs related to the pinched nerves can begin to malfunction and become diseased. For example: This is a very abbreviated list of tissues affected.

C1: Blood Pressure C2: Head and neck
C3: Diaphragm C4: Upper body muscles (e.g. Deltoids, Biceps)
C5: Wrist extensors C6: Wrist extensors
C7: Triceps C8: Hands

What other structures might be affected?

Cervical Musculature

The top middle picture is the cervical spine. The brain would be at the top within the skull, within the bones of the neck on the right of the picture and in the center near the top where three muscles come together, you can see an artery going through the transverses of the vertebrae. The muscles shown are but a few of the muscles of the cervical spine. There are nerves, arteries, veins, lymphatic vessels and glands, each so dense that if everything else was removed you could still see that someones neck was before you. Plus organs like the thyroid gland, the parathyroid gland, esophagus, larynx, and trachea. Diseases, infections, and dysfunctions of these structures can also lead to your pain in the neck.

How is the cause of neck pain diagnosed?

This is why you should fully fill out your Confidential Health History Forms. Please tell when and how your pain started. How long you have had it. Draw the location, intensity, how long it lasts, does it radiate up, down, inward or to the sides? What actions exacerbate, or relieve some of your symptoms? Does it help to sit, lie down, walk, exercise, sleep? What have you done or taken to try to get help? What other doctors have you seen to get help? As a Chiropractor I use the Subluxation Station which includes, Thermal Scanning, Surface Electromyography, computerized Range of Motion testing, and Heart Rate Variability Testing. I also use Active and Passive Functional Tests, Reflexes, and hands on palpation. X-rays are most often required. Occasionally I order MRI, CT Scans or Blood, hair, Urine, or saliva testing. If these do not give me a definitive diagnosis, I may have to refer you to someone else that can do more intensive testing.

How is Neck Pain Treated by a Chiropractor?

Treatment by a Doctor of Chiropractic is most often by Spinal Adjusting. This can be by hand, by mechanical instruments, and I use a computerized adjusting instrument called the Pro-Adjuster. We can use Muscle Stimulation, Ultrasound, Muscle Stripping, deep massage, Decompression Traction, taping and Nutritional Counseling.I will give you a home treatment program, this may include, exercise, heat/cold, cervical traction, and lifestyle changes. So what is your choice? Will you choose the safest way, proven by over 115 years of research and clinical excellence, the least changed method and largest drugless healing Profession in America or will you choose the most advertised, most changed, most sued, third leading cause of death in the United States? It is your choice, your life. Choose carefully. I am Dr. William Miskelly and I would like the opportunity to serve you.

Lecithin, as a nutritional substance, mostly comes from Soy Beans. The Vitamin Companies we use certify that their sources are GMO Free products. Lecithin is a fatty substance called a Phospholipid containing Nitrogen, Phosphorus, digestible Vitamin B Complex and is the prime source for choline. Lecithin is found especially in the brain and nerve cells. Lecithin is sticky, yet slippery, and has multiple uses in the human body.

What does Lecithin do?

  • Lecithin mobilizes calcium in the muscles, bones and connective tissues to reduce stiffness, especially after intense activity or inactivity, as sleeping, driving, using tools in cramped positions.
  • Lecithin coats the cell walls of the body keeping them supple and promotes and supports the Sodium/Potassium Pump in the production of muscle energy in the form of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP).
  • The nervous system requires Lecithin in order to produce Acetyl choline, which allows nerves to transfer mental impulses across the synapses between nerve fibers. This may well be one of the reasons memory is improved with Lecithin. Combining the free fatty acid DHL and Lecithin, promotes brain development through pregnancies.
  • Lecithin bathes the nerves to protect the myelin sheathes. (There are demyelinization types of diseases that break down the sheath protecting the nerves. Multiple Sclerosis is one of them.) Since Lecithin is so important the liver produces Lecithin, if your diet has the B vitamins, Nitrogen and Phosphorus needed to produce it.
  • The kidneys, vocal cords and heart valves need Lecithin to protect the filters, prevent irritation and help in repair.
  • Daily intake of Lecithin for adults is recommended at about 500 mg to 1000mg. Many of my sources utilize a gelatin perle of 1200 mg.

Side note: Lecithin dissolves cholesterol and fats to useable sized droplets. Fats and cholesterol are very important to the body.

Some uses of Lecithin, Cholesterol and fats are:

  • production of many of our hormones
  • decongesting of the liver and gallbladder
  • preventing the clogging of arteries and veins by undissolved cholesterol.
  • saponification (digestion) of heavy fats in the small intestines, cholesterol is a part of the bile salts released from the liver to the gallbladder, into the small intestines
  • Cholesterol is so important that your liver will produce it if you don’t have enough

Fort Wayne was the home of Central Soya, a large producer of Lecithin. Bunge, another agriculture company, purchased Central Soya.Vitamin Companies purchase this product to produce the nutritional capsules and granules Chiropractors in Fort Wayne recommend to their patients.

Attention: Users of Arthritis or Pain Relieving Drugs!!

Fort Wayne, Indiana is not unlike most other cities in these United States. Doctors and Chiropractors are looking for ways to bring relief to those with arthritis and pain. In 1999 the FDA awarded Merck a license to sell a new drug called VIOXX, a COX 2 Inhibitor. Dorothy Hamill, Olympic Figure Skating champion, once advertised this product. It was the best selling pain reliever of all time. However, September 2004, Vioxx was abruptly ripped from the market shelves leaving people scrambling for a replacement. BUT Vioxx worked! Why? Vioxx was found to greatly increase death by heart attacks and stroke. Merck researchers knew about it in 1996 but never reported it. What was the next best thing? CELEBREX!! In December of 2004 Pfizer released information admitting that Celebrex also had increased risk of heart attacks and stroke. Pfizer made another drug called BEXTRA, which had the same, increased side effects. In 2005 the FDA asked Pfizer to voluntarily withdraw Bextra.
Doctors and patients had to turn to the “perceived” safer drugs. NSAIDs had long been the standard years before COX 2 Inhibitors. After all, aspirin, naproxen, ibuprophen and ketoprofens are over-the-counter drugs, they must be safe. January 2005, The Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology stated, “not only do NSAIDs cause deadly stomach complications, but the extent of impact on the small intestine was largely unknown until now.” Stomach damage deaths alone reach 16,000 families yearly. The American Journal of Medical Sciences also reported Acute Renal Failure due to NSAIDs in 2001.
Acetaminophen has its own problems. While “seemingly safe” to the stomach, bowel and kidney, there was a recall of all children’s Tylenol products manufactured in early 2008 because of bacterial and mold contamination issued in September 2009. Then in December 2009, it was suggested that all acetaminophen products be recalled, including Vicodan or Hydrocodone Bitartrate, and Darvocet because of the risk of liver failure. I have not seen any report of this suggestion since that time.
Yes, Medical Doctors have a really tough time finding solutions for their patient’s pain when drugs have so many side effects, known and unknown. The Annals of Internal Medicine reported a possible source of help, Chiropractors, because 70% of their patients received relief from their pain through Chiropractic care without the risks or side effects of drugs.
